Sense of Architecture
SENSE OF ARCHITECTURE – ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURES FILMED BY HEINZ EMIGHOLZ
The exhibition presents an unaccustomed, interesting approach to arhitecture. Consisting of filmic narratives created by one person, it can be experienced as a presentation of architectural works but also as an independent work of art. This vivid three-dimensional, caleidoscopic spatial collage transforms the exhibition space and incorporates the viewer into itself. Buildings are portrayed in everyday situations with a static camera, and sounds are also included. The visitor will experience each building in a natural way externally, internally and in relation to the surroundings. All films were shot by artist Heinz Emigholz in the years 2005 and 2006. He describes his work as follows:
Architecture projects a two-dimensional design into reality, erecting it there as a three-dimensional situation. The film now takes this space and translates it by means of camera work into two-dimensional images that are presented to us in a given sequence of time. Thus we experience a space of thought. This repetition – from the idea to real space and via the viewing screen back to the space of thought – is remarkable. But, as we all know and as Kierkegaard discovered, there are no repetitions, and the result is something new: a surface on which we can think.
The material of the exhibition is organised under six themes: Cultures of Living, Public Structures, Architecture and Science, Interventions, Urban Ruralism and Sculptural Tendencies. The buildings on display are mainly from Styria but also from other Austrian states and abroad. Many of the new buildings are insertions in old urban structures, or new structures may appear inside old buildings or as their extensions. What is new stands out boldly as a sign of its time and is extremely diverse in form. The architectural vivacity of the designs is reflected in some names or characterisations the architects have given to them, such as "horizontally set high-rise building", Golden Nugget, The House with the Elephant Skin, Green Treefrog.
The exhibition has previously been on show in Berlin and last autumn at the Venice Architecture Biennial.
