Funding Scheme For Students

RIBA announces new funding scheme for students Posted: 29 October 2008

RIBA ANNOUNCES NEW FUNDING SCHEME FOR STUDENTS

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today launches the annual RIBA Walter Thomas Bursary,
in partnership with Walter Thomas.

The bursary will be awarded to the students who show the most promising design talent, but who are in
financial hardship. Awarded annually, the £10,000 bursary is being funded by Walter Thomas for
undergraduate students enrolled in RIBA validated schools of architecture.

A preference will be given to Part II applicants and this year’s entries will be judged by RIBA representatives,
Todd Curry of Walter Thomas, Simon Pugh-Jones Director of Barton Willmore, Keith Pavey Head of South
West Architecture at BDP and Chris Howe Director of Architecture Atkins.

Speaking today, John-Paul Nunes, RIBA Head of Education Projects said:

“We are delighted to partner with Walter Thomas to create and offer a funding scheme to students in need.
The RIBA encourages the promotion of education and research, and the relief of poverty of those who are
preparing to enter the profession of Architecture. We are aware that Part II students experience the highest
levels of financial hardship and the highest dropout rates in the degree. As such, this initiative by Walter
Thomas is extremely welcome.”

Speaking about the bursary, Todd Curry, Managing Director of Walter Thomas said:

“At the foundations of great architecture is great vision - we need to invest in the architecture students
of today so that we can have the best architects tomorrow. We feel that Walter Thomas has a social
responsibility to further invest in the sector we work within. Hopefully the RIBA Walter Thomas Bursary
will support some excellent talent which otherwise, sadly, could have been lost. We are delighted to
be working with the RIBA to support the future of architecture.

Walter Thomas is looking for the passion, the drive, the hunger or whatever it is that drives current
architecture students to shape the future contours of our green and pleasant land!

Architecture affects every person, it influences every facet of our lives and areas are judged on their design
style which is why the future of architecture is so important. If you are one of the people who wish
to shape the future, but are concerned about your finances, let your mind go and submit a drawing
for consideration.”
