DAM Award for Architecture in Germany 2008 goes to Peter Zumthor’s Kolumba Art Museum
24 selected buildings in the exhibition “German Architecture Annual 2008-9”

Since 1980 the Annual brought out by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum assesses the best buildings
of the respective year, and has long established itself as an indispensable reference work and a guide
of the current German architecture scene. However, two new aspects should be mentioned: all the buildings
presented in the Annual are also presented in an exhibition, and the outstanding achievement of one
architect is being recognized through the bestowal of the “DAM Award for Architecture in Germany“.
The Deutsches Architekturmuseum is bestowing this award for the second time.

This year the “DAM Award for Architecture in Germany“ goes to Kolumba, the Cologne Archbishopric’s Art
Museum. Designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor the building has been portrayed anew especially for
the Annual by architecture photographer Hélène Binet, London. There is no award money attached to
the “DAM Award for Architecture in Germany“. In recognition of their service to building culture, both
the architect and client receive a certificate and a statuette, which represents the “house within a house“,
the central idea of Ungers’ museum architecture - as a miniature.

The Kolumba Museum is one of 24 buildings short-listed by a jury of experts for the DAM Annual from
a total of 90 current projects. Of these 22 buildings were realized in Germany, some by German architect’s
offices, some by international architects such as David Chipperfield (London), Coop Himmelb(l)au (Vienna)
or Peter Zumthor (Switzerland), who is the only architect to feature in the Annual with a second project,
the Brother Claus Field Chapel in Wachendorf near Euskirchen.

Alongside the 22 outstanding examples of contemporary architecture in Germany, two projects are included
in the Annual and exhibition realized outside Germany by architect’s offices based in Germany. This year the
conversion of a submarine bunkers by LIN - Finn Geipel + Giulia Andi (Berlin) in St. Nazaire, France, and an
experimental house in Santiago de Chile by FAR Frohn & Rojas (Cologne) were honoured.

The 24 projects in the Yearbook cover a broad spectrum of architectural assignments. This year there is
a strikingly large number of conversions and modernizations. More than half the projects stand for the
increasingly important topic “building in existing buildings“. The fact that the winning project Kolumba likewise
belongs to this category underscores once again the growing importance of this area of architecture.

The new buildings included in the Annual include such unusual projects as the Munich BMW World by
Coop Himmelb(l)au and the new ski jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen by Terrain: Loenhart & Mayr.

The richly illustrated DAM Annual will be published by Prestel-Publishers on December 15, 2008. It sells for
EUR 39.95 in bookstores and EUR 29.95 from the DAM ticket desk.
